Where to Buy Soap Moulds

I consider myself a savvy shopper and I like to shop around for a good deal.

In my experience there are three main types of retailers for soap moulds:

  1. Online Market Places
  2. Craft Supply Stores
  3. Boutique Online Stores

1. Online Market Places

You can purchase soap moulds at online market places such as Amazon (www.amazon.com), Etsy (www.etsy.com), eBay (www.ebay.com), or AliExpress (www.aliexpress.com).

Depending where you live in the world you may be more familiar with one or the other, so let me share some information about them.

Amazon, Etsy, eBay and AliExpress are what are known as ‘online marketplaces’. That means that they are comprised of a number of ‘sellers’ selling all sorts of things.

Individual ‘sellers’ set the prices of their goods and as such, you may find the same item available from many different sellers across the marketplace at a range of different prices.

All of these online market places offer buyer protection if you have an issue with a seller. Just make sure you are aware of all the terms and conditions before you make a purchase.

What’s the main difference between them?

Well Amazon and eBay have a number of sites for different geographical locations (though they do sell to other selected countries from those sites), whereas Etsy and AliExpress are each one big site that sells to most countries world-wide.

Amazon’s local set-up gives them the advantage of un-rivalled shipping speeds.

EBay and Etsy’s sellers are world wide but internet geolocation will direct you to local sellers and/or convert to your local currency when you visit their website.

When you purchase from AliExpress, having your item shipped from China is more often than not the only option (though some selected items can be shipped from Russia or the US).

Chinese shipping is reliable however, and the savings can be significant (plus you can pay a little extra to have it delivered faster – check out the e-packet option).

Again, internet geolocation will direct you to a version of their website with local language and currency conversions.

But a lot of the items for sale look exactly the same?

Amazon, eBay and Etsy are based in the United States and Aliexpress is based in China.

Yet despite their geographical differences, many (but not all – you gotta do your research!) of the items on these sites have been sourced from the same merchant (sometimes you find the exact same product images on each website!).

Etsy sells handmade wares, so you can find unique handmade soap moulds on Esty that you won’t find anywhere else, but there are still many identical soap moulds available across all three online market places.

This provides you (the shopper) with a HUGE advantage.

Say you find an identical item on multiple sites. Since the items, and thus the quality of the items, are basically the same, you can choose the price, seller and marketplace that best meets your needs depending on what is important to you.

For example…
If you live in the US and next day delivery is important to you, Amazon is the way to go. But if you are happy to wait a little longer for your item to arrive, take a look at eBay, Etsy or AliExpress as you may find a better deal (plus you may have the option to pay a little more for faster shipping if required).

If you live outside the US then you may find that Aliexpress, Etsy, or your local eBay site has better prices AND shipping options for your country.

Either way, check them all out and bag the best buy for you!

2. Craft Supply Stores

Large craft department stores such as Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Joann usually carry a range of silicone moulds for many projects including making melt and pour soap bars.

In Australia, our main craft supply stores are Spotlight and Lincraft.

When browsing your favourite craft supply store you are sure to find some great options for soap moulds, but when you see something you like – grab it. It might not be there next time.

3. Boutique Online Stores

Boutiques a small specialty stores that exclusively sell a specific range of products – in this case, soap making products and accessories.

These stores, such as Wholesale Supplies Plus in the US, sell soap moulds alongside soap making supplies.

In Australia, we have the online soap supplies stores Aussie Soap Supplies and Bayside Soap, and online boutique mould supplier, Mouldtastic, which exclusively sells silicone moulds for creative projects.

Cute and Affordable Soap Moulds

Here is my pick of the best ‘cute and affordable’ soap moulds and where you can purchase them.

Before we begin I want to state that all the pictures in this post are pictures that I took of soap that I made with these soap moulds. I have not copied and pasted any images from anywhere else. I also pain-painstakingly measured and weighed (in imperial and metric!) all of my soaps in order to bring you accurate information about what you are getting when you purchase one of these moulds for any creative project.

Enjoy!

Soap Weight
One single soap weighs 0.9oz OR 25g when set. To fill the entire mould you would need 8.82oz OR 250g of soap. Don’t forget to add 5-10% for wastage.

Pros and Cons
The plastic tray is a huge pro. It enables you to easily transport your soap as soon as it is poured without the risk of spilling or misshaping your soap. This mould is also great for making bath bombs and fizzies.
A con may be the size of this soap, as it is rather small (but you could also argue that adds to its cuteness).

Apart from being beautiful, this mould makes a good size cake of soap that fits well in the hand for whole-body washing (if you can bear to use it that is). Turning out the soap once it was set was very easy also.

This mould has been available for a while and the reason for this is obvious – it’s super cute! Plus with the ability to make eight bars of soap in four different designs at the same time, it’s sure to become one of your favourites too.

insect soap with mould

Mould Material
The mould is made out of thin silicone into the shape of a leaf. When full of liquid soap it can become quite sensitive to movement. You will need to put the mould on a tray AND allow a skin to form over recently-poured soap if you wish to transport your soap before it is fully set.

Mould Size
The entire mould measures (Length x Width x Height):
Inches – 10 2/8″ x 7 6/8″ x 1 2/8″
Centimetres – 26.4cm x 20cm x 3cm

This mould makes 8 bars of soap in 4 different designs:
Butterfly – 2 3/8″ x 2 1/8″ x 1 3/16″ OR 6cm x 5.5cm x 2.8cm
Dragonfly – 2 2/8″ x 2 7/16″ x 1 3/16″ OR 6.2cm x 7cm x 2.8cm
Bee – 2 7/16″ x 2 2/8″ x 1 3/16″ OR 7cm x 6.2cm x 2.8cm
Lady Beetle – 2 9/16″ x 2″ x 1 3/16″ OR 6.7 x 5.2 x 2.8cm

Soap Weight
The soap weights are as follows:
Butterfly – 1.5oz OR 42g
Dragonfly – 1.4oz OR 40g
Bee – 1.2oz OR 35g
Lady Beetle – 1.7oz OR 48g

To fill the entire mould you would need approx 11.65oz OR 330g of soap (plus 5-10% for wastage).

Pros and Cons
This soap is a good size for guest soap. The Dragonfly and Bee have more pronounce wing-shapes which can make them somewhat awkward to use.
Because the mould is so delicate once filled it was hard to tap out any bubbles that formed with the pouring of the soap.

But seriously, this mould makes the kind of soap that when you gift it makes people say you have real talent, when really all you did was pour some soap into a mould (yep it’s that simple folks!).

Apart from soap, you can use them to make:

and anything else you can dream up!

There are multiple designs and they are beautifully detailed.

All of these flower moulds are approximately the same size and the average measurement is (Diameter x Height) :
Inches – 2″ x 1″

These moulds make single bars of soap.

silicone flower moulds

Soap Weight
Each soap weighs, on average, 0.9oz OR 25g. Some moulds are bigger, others are smaller.

Pros and Cons
I am in love with the variety of flowers available and each one has a delicate and intricate design. These moulds are so versatile and can be used for practically any creative project.

Sometimes if you fill them all the way to the top they can be a little tricky to turn out. I like to leave a 1/16″ or 2mm gap from the top when filling so you can just press down on the top and pop them out.
